Looking to getting into making my own jigheads. Would need jig molds, as well as a melting pot, pouring ladel, etc. Any advice on where else a guy could shop around for this stuff would help too. Thanks

Do it molds will let you order direct from their site, they are more money but you can usually find the stuff that luremaking or lurepartsonline don't stock...

Cabelas has production pots and plain old lead melters, usually in stock... Fishing hole has a few molds but shit components to go with them... if your looking to make good jigs than be prepared to modify molds to accept better hooks... the 575 hooks that 90% of the molds are designed for are garbage hooks...

I started making my own jigs last year because I couldn't find ones that I really liked. I have been experimenting ever since with different hooks, paints, colours, finishes, eyes, and other ideas. The "do it" mold that I use has 6 different compartments with sizes from 1/16" to 5/8" all in the same mold. I now have quite an assortment of customised jigs that I hope to test on unsuspecting greenbacks this fall and winter.

A pretty good selection of "do it" molds and supplies can also be found at http://store.do-itmolds.com/Jig-Molds_c_16.html or at http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/do-it-molds/. Ensure that you take proper safety precautions when working with lead! Some good information can be found at http://do-itmolds.com/lead-molding-precautions.php.

Lots of guys run the 604 gamagastu, while it's a better alternative to the eagle claw 575, it's a brittle hook...

I ran the mustad 2x (#8419???), top of the line super strong hooks, wanna say somewhere around $.35 per hook (bulk price)... the owner 3x I use in the greenback slammers is considerably more expensive than that, and has a shade more shank length than the 2x hooks...

Before you start machining out molds, order a few 10 or 25 packs of hooks and find a hook that suits your needs and budget...

Take it for what you will, I like heavy hooks, fine wire $.25 jigs are of absolutely no use to me whatsoever... You may like less expensive and hooks that will bend and pull out of snags, I would rather lose a few jigs and have solid hooks than bend a hook open on a fish...

I can attest to how strong @Patty 's hooks are. I definitely break off when I have a good snag using his hooks. I've also pulled out a few when I didn't think I was going to be able to and the hooks were still great. Need some more Patty! ;)

The 575 hook is not a bad hook for lighter applications or summertime walleyes etc. Pretty hard to straighten out these hooks on 6 lb test lol Used to get them at BPS for $25 per 1000... .35 per hook would work out to $350. per thousand Quite a difference in price for a jig that may get snagged first cast ? Like the better hooks for ice fishing tho as they can last all season

I have been experimenting with making my own jigs for personal use. I prefer fine wire short shank stinger eye jigs. Here is a picture of my latest batch of 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs using different colours of 3D eyes. All are powder painted using a fluid bed and cured using a toaster oven. The finish is extremely durable. I have yet to see a fish clip the paint. The ones on the left are made with "Eagle Claw" 571 hooks in a 1/0 size. The ones on the right are a little thicker and stronger but not quite as short, made with "Owner" Model # 5313-111 hooks, also in a 1/0 size. I always use clip on braid stinger hooks to attach to the second eye. All are de-eyed, de-barbed and water ready to be tested out on some unsuspecting greenbacks.

Try mudhole, tacklewarehouse, jansnetcraft, they might have or be able to get them for you... careful though, some of that stuff has a minimum quantity that's probably enough to last ten lifetimes!!! Eagle claw or matzuo has a wicked heavy wire sickle hook I'd love to get my hands on, minimum order is 25,000 hooks though.......

As for the eagle claws @Kreutzer243, best bet would be to order a 25 pack and try them out and see if they suit your needs...
