I didn’t notice if depth surveying was on the list of Ontario’s critical business ...? Presumably it’s critical though, Ontario’s list was pretty exhaustive....otherwise it’ll be all MB content for 2021. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but would be nice to continue building on da woods coverage per the original (master) plan...

What's your plans with woods? To have full coverage eventually down the road or do you have a stopping point in mind?

I get it that the Northern anglers want their waterbody mapped, but.....

Ummmm, biggest, most popular, most interesting, best variety of species in fishing, highest-end tournament water, most money to spend on Lowrance, per capita---lake was announced in this thread...... I think the guys at AEM just made more Lowrance owners mess their pants with pure joy, than when the HDS Touch line hit the shelves.

I doubt we will ever achieve full coverage...surveying US waters is not something we aspire to do.

I’d prefer once you got to the eastern edge of Kenora, turn north and survey the river till you hit the 3rd dam

    Coward for mayor!

I'm totally down with that, from a selfish perspective.

From a different perspective-- how cool would it be to have the Winnipeg River, in it's entirety from the Norman Dam to Lake Winnipeg.

I'm not speaking for the owners/operators of AEM here.

We can all put in a wish list as consumers, and it is really cool AEM listens sincerely to their customers, but at the end of the day, they are a business, and in addition to giving the people what they want, have to also think about what sells.

--resident footprint: your Falcon lakes, and Lac Du Bonnets, that have wall to wall cottages.

--annual popular tournaments: tournament anglers buy units and maps based on competitive necessity. The group is fairly niche, but you have a commitment level from that group that you don't get elsewhere.

    --Popular day-trip water

We likely all have a favorite lake with not a cabin on it, that few people fish that we'd love to have the best map available for....but, that doesn't pay the bills.

^^^and thats when you do it yourself!
Most of us have a unit that can do so, especially warranted when, as you say, it is not cost effective for mapmakers to do so.

not as easy as it sounds to produce a good looking map. even of one point or reef, sounds great when you dont have it. i did a couple passes with it while fishing and you get very little coverage. would basically have to shut fishing down , map your spot , then fish to make it any good.
why social maps only has on spec here and there on woods or bigger lakes ...

I think if you find a hump or reef that looks interesting or whatever, throw a waypoint down and start mapping it.
I have a buddy that fishes Shoal a lot and he has a Helix and basically fishes there all the time. I went out with him last year and looked at his screen and all I saw were tracks everywhere on his screen. I told him is he would have been mapping he'd have one hell of a map by now, he just shrugged it off and said he knew the lake well enough that he didn't need a map.

I've done the same, as many that of us have I'm sure, that got super excited about live mapping when it was available and the only option on some lakes (still many others) at the time. It doesn't take much time, of even only mapping a few spots here and there, to realize, live mapping isn't something most guys wanna do......it's something you do more out of necessity than anything--only option.

Want proof live mapping is not ideal? ---pay attention to the birdie-boosters that were, not long ago, spouting how their live mapping was all they'd need cuz it's just soooo awesome ...listen to what those same guys are saying about surveyed maps now....live mapping ain't so incredibly awesome once they have a choice.

Pre-loaded chips are the ideal product on our plotters. See a retail package on the shelf , buy it, take it out of package and plug it in and go fish. That's ideal, in my opinion, and likely most others.

I still use my autochart a lot, use the Navionics as a base point and fine tune things with autochart.

I’ve found some really great structure that way on my stretch of the Winnipeg River, the best example was a slight “hump” of you could even call it that, that after being fully charted turned out to be 3 humps (primary, secondary and tertiary) that are slightly different depths and hold fish well in the fall

And Lowrance users would have done the same thing if their product had this feature first.

Mike, stop the birdie bashing please. I can speak for many when I say we are all getting sick of listening to the constant Bird put downs. Use what you like, its a free world. Please let others do as they please too - there is no need to diss what someone put their hard earned coin into.

Preloaded maps are great options, I do agree. Craig and Rob have done an awesome job with their AEM company, and certainly filled a niche! But making your own is also a VERY good option, regardless of brand, or you have no preloaded chip.

My enthusiasm for live and custom mapping options sure fizzled out once the waters I frequent became AEM mapped. Live mapping makes sense where commercial high quality surveys aren’t available. That remote lake with little pressure, making a custom map can be a rewarding passion project.

On another note, you can consider the StructureMap feature as a mapping tool, and a very good and under-utilized one at that. Overlaying SideScans onto existing high quality AEM surveys doesn’t get old for me.

Adding some structure mapping to existing maps is on my list of things to do this year. Some areas of Lake Winnipeg deserve some time with that tool.
