    Again, good work!

We are thrilled to announce another new addition to the Angler's Edge Mapping catalog for 2020....the Red River from the St. Norbert Floodway gates to Lockport - approximately 65 river kilometers (not including the Assiniboine River, upstream from the Forks as far as is navigable)!

Everyone knows that the Red River downstream of Lockport gets a ton of fishing pressure. This is for good reason, as it is a phenomenal fishery. Conversely, the portion of the Red River that flows through the city of Winnipeg gets barely any pressure. Basically, a handful of casual shore anglers on any given day. Why might that be? Poor fishery? Or simply underutilized? Well....last year we had the pleasure of watching a presentation about recent fish movement studies throughout the Red River put on by Fish Futures. We heard hugely informative talks from a professor from the University of Nebraska as well as a research scientist from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. And by the end of the presentation, it was obvious to a bunch of hardcore anglers in attendance that it would be worth exploring sections of the Red not frequented by the masses. The revelation that a large proportion of Channel Catfish ascend past Lockport (apparently with some frequency, presumably linked to spawning further upstream) was particularly intriguing...

Sorry to keep those of you we spoke to at that presentation in the dark about this till now....but this release should help you dial in this untapped piece of river!

Awesome! This will open up a tonne of angling interest for that stretch of the Red.

Well blow me dry and call me Dusty. Never saw that one coming. I used to fish the Whittier Park to the Seine River and parts of the Seine River when I was a yute.
It’ll be interesting to see that fir sure.

    That is so cool!

Did you survey around the flood gates in low water.....if so...did you hear a *pa-ting* at all? Heheh, she's shallow there in spots....snaggy too.

Also, that hole right out from Maple Grove...more specifically the lip of it.....so many Cats around there at times.

There's a ton of character on that river on this map. Very under-utilized. Has some great fishing.

From Maple Grove to the flood gates...very cool stretches of the Red, and the depths are pretty surprising in some holes. Upstream of St. Nob (not yet mapped) also has spots that hold a silly number of Sauger that don't get fished.....fun for kids.

Any plans to go south of the gates at St. Nob? Would love to have the Morris/Plum St jean area...would ease up my pucker-fatigue (it gets so surprisingly shallow in big areas...had no idea the Red was capable of looking like that on sonar)...also, help me find the Sturgeon in the area......oooops, did I say that out loud? :p

The Floodway Gates are actually very dangerous. Essentially, at certain flow conditions they function as a low head dam, and create hydraulic conditions that can swamp boats and drown people. Two guys from NSC almost died there about 12 years ago. They thought they could go through because it didn't look that bad...they hit the gate, and their motor stopped. With no power, they were quickly swung around and their 16' boat was capsized. They couldn't escape the hydraulics. They were extremely fortunate that another boat was on site to rescue them - even so they both swallowed lots of water. Anyway, we do not want to encourage boaters to venture through the floodway gates, so our map stops ~50 m back from the gates.

I spent a fair bit of time on the Red in Winnipeg last year. Had a lot of family outings in the boat launching at the North Perimeter and cruising down to the Forks (when the docks are in at the Forks, it's the best parking you can get there!). Lots and lots of cool stuff going on in the river here....and lots and lots of fish marked on the sonar (I spent zero time fishing it unfortunately). I was surprised sometimes at the amount of boat trailers in the parking lot at the North Perimeter, but yet from there to the Forks I could probably count on one hand (in multiple trips) the amount of people I saw fishing by boat. Only a handful of people fishing from shore, too.

I'm somewhat convinced that this section of map (floodway gates up to Lockport) is one of the most underutilized, but easily accessible, fisheries in the province.

Just remember to hook up your boat to muffs or flushing port and flush out the engine when you get home... that silt can build up in the cooling passages of your engine and turn rock hard and eventually cause overheating.
Heard some horror stories from the river taxies engines overheating
