it's an option in my head that's for sure. If I do that it's gonna be on a unit that can eventually handle a live scope or panoptix unit

Hmmm.... So you can't ditch the hook because then you have no mapping.

And you are wanting to upgrade to livescope/panoptix,

Have you thought about going livesight/active target? Gives you the mapping and the "live" setup, and it sounds like the new Elite units are pretty sweet.....

If you weren't losing faith in the LX-5 I would say keep it and sell the hook and upgrade the Lowrance unit, but I know what it's like to faith in your gear and it sucks.

Personally I like having a flasher as part of the arsenal and unless my Vex gets stolen or destroyed I can't see myself ever getting rid of it and not having a mechanical flasher around.

When talking about personal units your talking about almost zero as a sample size. Marcums are very well known for having bad motors on the later models, just like spoon stated. My Lx 7 was a piece of shit and always getting repaired before it became "bullet proof", on the other hand Biggamefisher's was bullet proof right from the start. On the large scale of flashers (that all do the same thing with low tech involved talk to a store owner to get a better sample size look. Bobby told me Marcum was hands down the most returned unit due to malfunction. Take that for what it is but he sold a lot of flashers. If you own a boat or thinking you will I would lean towards Green's advice on a duel purpose unit.

I doubt the panoptix or live is gonna happen right now just not gonna be in the cards but if I do decide to go graph unit. It's definitely gonna be on a unit that I can add those features down the road.

The live set ups are sweet and I haven't even assembled mine and I want to upgrade lol, but they are big and clunky and an expensive bit of gear to have with you on ice. Which is another reason that having a mechanical flasher and a spare/back up etc is nice

There were definitely some bad motors out there for quite some time. Timing seems to be everything when it comes to replacing them under warranty. Depending on when warranty work was done, maybe you got bad stock still from replacing the motor, twice. I would suggest getting it fixed again and then see how it works. If it is still covered through warranty, or even a small service charge, you really don't have much to loose. They are good units.

I sent my LX5 down the road after the 2nd motor was replaced, it was new in 2014 there was lots of chatter on the net that the new motors were junk but the older units were rock solid. I replaced it with a Vex FL 18 it has been a awesome unit.

Yep, they did one for me last year on a used not working unit I picked up for cheap. Was more expensive to get them to fix then was sending them back to Marcum USA but sounded like they changed their repair procedures. If reside in Canada send to video re-fit... if in states send to Marcum USA. This is what I got off their website before took mine in.

I still have an older lx-5 that I bought off BGF that has worked flawlessly. Bought another used one that needed repair, sent to the states to get work done, motor lasted less than a year, sent back under warranty and then got rid of it, at least made money off of it.
Don’t think I’d go back to marcum after buying a vex.

You should consider grabbing a garmin 75cv ice bundle. Can be used on the boat or ice, gas mapping, you can upgrade to livescope or panoptix down the road. As a 2d unit, way more features than any unit on the market.

I think I paid a flat rate of $80us to fix mine, they go everything and replace what is needed for that price.

Wow. If I were you @Little Spoon I would probably just sell it "as is" to someone, explicitly stating it is broken and it is going to cost them $200 to get fixed....and move on.

What does it do, right out of the box, "way more features than any unit on the market" rating?

Or...is it "when marketed for ice fishing, it has way more features, for the price, than any other unit on the market"

I just don't get the "as a 2D unit" part, cuz every unit does 2D out of the box. And keep in mind, Garmin's options for mapping are very limited, so you pretty much need one of the other brands to use your chosen mapping quality and coverage.

That sucks Spoon. That's a little steep for a repair job of a simple flasher. Did they at least use the good lube that doesn't get sticky after 45 seconds?
