Old wives tales or not? For years I've heard it said fishing is poor during a full moon period but excellent during the new moon period and they meant fishing day or night. I've never really paid attention to be honest and never bothered to differentiate between them but I've caught some nice smallies and walleyes in the mid-summer heat late at night on bright moon fishing leopard frogs and floating rapalas. Got me wondering how or if it affects trout fishing on ice during daylight hours?

What I've noticed around full moons with walleye on lake winnipeg is the the bite window is alot sharper and notice it alot more around this time of year not sure if it's light penetration thing or what.

All animals are affected by the moon.

    Humans are animals.

Talk to emerg nurses that have been around awhile. Full moon is a busy shift.

That being said, once I quit fishing Musky, I quit paying attention to moon phases. Theres bite windows that relate to the moon for sure, but I feel like it's not really nearly as important as many other factors ....like just finding the biggest population you can.....when you find a pile of em.....who gives a poo what the moon is doing, just make em bite.

Had a gf years ago that was a nurse at a psych hospital. She dreaded the full moon shifts.

So far.... give me new moons over full moons any day for musky! I do keep an eye on the solunar calendar year round and regardless of species for me it's weather over everything. I'll certainly be aware of the moon phases and times but more so to use that period to either go back on something I raised that didnt bite or to just fish a big complex during that time so I'm not on the throttle. I'd say fish when you can first and foremost..... that said comparing with friends there is a trend to the moon activity with activity both major and minor. I could see having more faith or concern if I lived on the lake and could fish when I choose.... right now I fish when I can for as long as I can.

Yup, fish when you can and make the best of it!
No doubt critters/fish are more active, but its up to you to give them what they want. <<< that alone is something else you have to figure out!!!
One thing that was a bit of a shocker in reviewing my records, and it happened waymore than half of the time, was that a full moon phase May thru Oct, usually brought shit weather - either unstable, or storms, or high winds - i mean not small craft warning wind, but storm or gale type winds. Its pretty easy to do a weather review using archived data - weather, solunar, etc - you can plot your experiences fishing/hunting/weather for those times, and the more you research, the more likely you’ll see a pattern.

But again, make the best of the time youre out there - whenever it is. There are a lot more variables you can control to enhance your experience, regardless of solunar data.
