I've thought of having two cranking batteries for those long days of running the electronics w/o running the motor. Could you explain if/how this could help a dumb SOB like me do this?

The isolator splits the charge from the motor between 2 batteries instead of sending it all to one.

I have upgraded from 2 group 27’s (cranking and deep cycle) to a group 31 NorthStar AGM for cranking and running all electronics and it will be getting all the charge now

@Fishaholic. Basically what the battery isolator does when wired correctly is...

It isolates the starter battery from the second battery. That way the electronics don't use power from the starter battery but the motor still charges both batteries. Your starter battery wouldn't get drained from running the electronics becauce it's "isolated."
