I've been meaning to bring up this question with the members. Tx for bringing that up BGF.

Where do you guys want the cut off timer to be set at?

    2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, ....

I'm sure most of you realize there has to be a time out. It can't be to crazy long...

Post your thoughts and we'll take it from there.

5 or 10 minutes. I generally don't catch the auto corrected words till after I hit send.

On most forums the time limit is 2 minutes. A few have it set at 3 minutes. I know of only one with a 5 minute limit. I don't know of any with a timer set to over 5 minutes.

But that don't matter. I don't care what other forums do. I'll set it to whatever you guys feel you need it set at. (Within reason of course)

10-15 minutes is a good window of time.

Let me try to explain why there is a cut of time to edit a post...

There's two main reasons why there's a time limit for members to edit a comment.

First... Confrontational comments. When members debate a subject, it could get nasty very quickly if members can go back and edit what was originally said. This is self explanatory.
My thinking is, this is a fishing forum. How confrontational do we get on here. I like to think we're all grown ups. We don't get into arguments that get out of hand to the point where members will edit their comments to reflect a diffent point of view.

Second... This has to do with SEO (search engine optimization).

Once a website grows to a certain point, it gets crawled by search engine bots very fast. Often times just seconds after a comment is posted. The more relevant the comment is in relation to the thread, (for example keywords and tags) the faster that thread get reindexed. Or "updated" in the major search engines' database.

It is every webmasters' dream to get indexed thousands of times a day and ranked higher than the competitor site.

That is not a far fetched dream. In fact that is the long term plan for CFF. I have my own personal rep at Google. I have to work with him to stay within the rules n regulations of Google so as not to get what is known as "Google Slapped".

So, once we decide on a time limit most members can live it, I'll contact my rep at Google and request all new threads and comments not be crawled and indexed for that allotted time after being created.

If that isn't done, here's what would happen.

A member comments "walleye bite is hot at pone fills right now".

2 minutes later Mr Google shows up. Indexes that comment because it's relevant to the forum and thread because of the keyword walleye.

2 minutes later the member notices his spelling mistake. He didn't want to type "pone fills". He meant to say "pine falls". So the member edits the comment.

Now google comes back to see what's been added. The bot grabs the update and sends it to the google database. The database says we already got that one thank you.

Then a user on google searches "bite at pine falls". Google says nothing here. We got "pone fills". So google doesn't show CFF in the search results.

With time, the new edited comment will be updated at google. But with a penalty to the forum. Instead of showing the search results to the user on the first page, it'll show it on page 7, 8, or 9....

    You get the picture?

Now let's talk editing thread titles. Editing a thread title is always a bad idea. Even a misspelled word in a title is better then a changed title. I will never edit a title that has already been submitted to the search engines. Doing that will cause a 404. A 404 is a broken link. Changing the title of a thread is changing the link that has been submitted to the search engines. 404s are bad news. Google hates 404s.

So there you have it. I tried to put it in laymans terms. Hope this helps.

Lol. It just seems complex. It really isn't.

I was just trying to paint a picture for the average user so they have an idea what needs to be done behind the scenes to get a website listed on the front page of google. Google has changed a lot of rules over the last ten years. None of them made it any easier for website owners.

I'm thinking along the lines 5. How about we try that for a while. 5 minutes is actually quite liberal. If we find the members want or need more time after a while then we can increase it a couple minutes.

    All in agreement???

Sorry, I'm still laughing at this statement "My thinking is, this is a fishing forum. How confrontational do we get on here. I like to think we're all grown ups. We don't get into arguments that get out of hand to the point where members will edit their comments to reflect a diffent point of view."

    Yes, 5 minutes is fine.

5 min seems like plenty of time, had no idea there was so much to something as simple as editing a post.
