Haven’t heard anything good about them. Wait until december and call bass pro. They put their end of model year mercs on sale. Last xmas they had the 9.9 pro kicker for $2700! You wont find a better price on merc motors anywhere. The closest price competitor last year was $900 more!! Seems to me if I recall correctly the Coleman is an indistrial Tohatsu?

Tohatsu doesn’t build the Coleman engine as far as I know.

    From Wikipedia:

Mercury Marine's primary business is outboard motors. Mercury Outboards, 30 Hp and less, are made by Tohatsu in Japan.[1] Mercury Marine builds 40, 50 and 60 horsepower outboard motors in Suzhou, China.[2] Mercury also manufactures engines over 75 horsepower at its facility in Fond du Lac in Wisconsin.

Mercury also makes the MerCruiserline of sterndrives (inboard/outboard drives) and inboard motors. Mercury Racing is the company's division for racing engines tailored for power and speed.

I guess that means my 1998 25 2-stroke was a Tohatsu. It was one tough reliable engine.

^ nope, that 98 25hp would have still been Merc (but yes they were awesome)... the Tohatsu built 2-strokes started in 2007 or 2008 I think.

from what i remember, the Tohatsu versions had weak gearcases... and when you removed the cowling, it reminded me of the old 25hp Mariners of the 80's lol.

the 4-strokes that Tohatsu builds for Merc are better IMO than the 2-strokes... they need a bit of love right out of the box - shipped out slightly lean to meet EPA. nothing a run in the test tank and a little fine tuning doesn't cure lol.
Far as i know, the Coleman Chinese engines, and Shakespeare and any other of the cheapo Chinese engines are just knock offs that someone stole the blueprints and started building them in China.
From when i was in Mercury school, there were stories of the Chinese built 40/50/60 4-strokes (pretty darn good engines IMO) where an engineer stole plans and set up a plant pretty much next door and started building Merc knocks offs - biggest issue was they weren't using tolerances that Merc had and they used an extremely cheap white pressed metal which was porrus and had issues with fuel leaching through it lol.
to my knowledge, none of these ever came across the pond, they were solely for the Chinese market.
