Was drop shotting for walleyes today (fish love that thing!) But I was dropping quite a few fish. (Lost something heavy boat side.) I'm using a 1/0 vmc spin shot tied to 10lb power pro on a 6'10" medium power fast action fenwick. What rod/line set up are you using for this? Or is my set up fine and my technique just sucks?

I'd go with something with more bend and less backbone. Using barbless hooks makes it difficult for them to stay on and with any loss of tension they can get off. Maybe try a medium light instead of the medium.

My fave dropshot rod (for Smallies) is an Elite Tech med-lite 6'9" slow action. It loads from tip to about 20 inches above the cork, nice and evenly.

You could also experiment with the wide gap (ewg) worm hook spinshot. It's made for bigger/longer fluke style baits for Smallmouth but I bet it'd be great for salted minnows as well. (if that's what you're fishing)

It could be that you might want to experiment with your hookset. For dropshotting, I just lift and reel, and avoid an aggressive hookset. Just enough to sink the barb on the light wire hooks. For Walleye, I'd completely avoid the Neko spinshot....I'm not even sure that makes any sense they made that one...

Thanks. I'll have to look into a different rod next season and work on my hookset with what I have I did try and be more careful but they were hammering it so aggressively it's hard to stay calm and take it easy on them when they do that haha.

That's how you can tell you've got a Walleye compared to a Smallie, typically. Walleye smash the piss out of it and even the biggest Smallies, even tho they prob did hit it hard, you don't feel it the same way.....usually just some spongy weight all of a sudden.

If they're hammering it like that, I'd try the wide gap ewg ( a worm hook) version of spin shot. Those ones, on a bite like that, you should keep your heavy rock-the-boat hookset. It should pop out the cheek of the Walleye. Won't loose em then! :)

For Walleye, I bet you get away with your current rod just fine by adjusting your hookset and/or trying a different hook. Worse comes to worst...you get to go rod shopping...oh well
