So last season a few tackle trays of cranks /spoons went MIA for a bit - seems as tho they found that small gap at the stern where there covertly hid under the splashwell... found the suckas the other day, which made me smile! Couple hun $$$ worth!!!
So open them up, full of water and rusty hooks...grhhhh
So before i threw them out, i thought i would put in an ultrasonic cleaner (i use for fuel injector cleaning as well as other stuff) mixed with CLR 1 part to 6 parts water...
Two 15 min cycles, and the lures came out almost pristine, but hooks need replacing.
    Phewww....
gave them a good rinse in soapy water, then just water, let dry, then sprayed with wax to help keep them looking good
Now just have to add hooks when i can find my split ring pliers....

What kind of wax did/do you spray them with?

I find my thumbnail works better than any set of split ring pliers.

I looked for a while for a pair I liked and settled on the Berkley set at Cabelas recently. So handy to have in the boat especially swapping out hooks in the fall time.

I hate misplacing tackle trays and unfortunately it happens more often than I'd like to admit. :p

I'm a little leery of putting any chemicals at all on any fishing gear

@chrism never replied about what wax he used so I grabbed that, if I don’t use it on the lures I will use it on the Toyota

Beeswax is what i ended up using as its scentless
I did say in original post that i sprayed, which i started to - then when sprayer clogged, i simply melted beeswax candles (scentless) in boiling water - wax stays on top - dip into boiling water, and they are coated with wax when you pull them out.
This melted wax in boiling water trick is used for critter traps - makes them scentless if done properly.

I wonder if one could dissolve bees wax in turpentine or something similar so it could just be dipped and dried fast for thin coat. Any solvent would be gone fast in the hot sun if you did it during the summer.

Vinegar soak followed by a good rinse in water, dry and put away.
Simple, effective, cheap, quick, and it works.

I've heard coca cola works any truth to that? Found some lures that need some love as there is some rust forming on it

What I find best for rusty hooks is to just replace them.

Yes CLR to get the bodies clean of stains/rust, possibly 'some' hooks (only if minor stains/rust), and replace anything that looks suspect (pitted/worn/weak/etc).
No Name CLR at Home Depot isn't much more expensive than coke ($10/gallon) - and does 100x better job.
Hooks are cheap. Bodies of lures are not!
