I've had my Marcum LX5 for what has to be 8-9 years. Been super solid. I had it serviced last year or the year before at Marcum and they installed a new motor if I'm not mistaken. It's also got a newer transducer. I also replaced the battery yesterday with a new one from MB Battery.

I'm tossing around the idea of trading for something with a larger display. Anyone have something that fits the bill?

    Got it and replied.

What I'm after is another flasher in trade. Something like an Ice 55 or Vexilar with a dual beam ducer like the Marcum has.

I could ask my neighbour if he still wants to sell his lx7 if you want. He talked about selling it in the spring.

I'm not really in the market to spend more money on ice fishing gear this year. Sort of hoping for a trade.

Is the marcum display really that much smaller than the 55 or vexes?

Just a heads up those 2 beam ducers are basically impossible to find. They dont seem to make duals anymore just a tri beam (which is apparently shit) and a proview transducer (has a blue bottom and is adjustable cone angle using the gain knob). I have the proview on my FL-20 if you ever wanna take it out to try have at it.

It's smaller for sure. I love the LX 5 too. Just want a bigger display because I squint too much and get headaches.

Get glasses! You are getting old like the rest of us. LOL. That's why I went to the LX6, so I can see it. Fricken getting old sucks!

If I was to sell the LX5, what would a fair price be? Odds are good I'll end up keeping it, but man, those FLX 28's are pretty sweet...

Ben, just throwing out an honest opinion-- If I had to do it over again, I would not have bought an Ice-55. It's decent....but out of the 3 flasher brands, Vex, Bird and Marcum, bird has a pretty "flickery" return. I routinely lose marks, like my bait, even adjusting gain. Best way I can describe--the return is not very solid or vivid, like a Vex or Marcum. My preference is Vex by a landslide. The return and display is rock solid and has that *warm* colorful look with awesome contrast.

I like my 55 fine...mainly because it has a bigger screen and was less expensive when i bought, but I just find it isnt a solid or vivid return. My old FL-8 in the other hole 3 or more feet away marks a jig or bait way more solid than the 55 in the same hole as my bait.

The bigger screen is why I run the 55 often tho, plus it just fits perfectly in my sled cage with a heater.

I'd honestly consider trading the 55, but Marcum just blasts out too much interference for other units for my liking, otherwise I'd strongly consider....but if I was you, I'd take the first Vex trade that came along. Nicest display in my opinion...even smaller screen shows great contrast without squinting

I can sympathize with squinting...40 years of 20/20 vision...every month that goes by I find myself needing reading glasses more and more. I can't read the fine print on a bottle of tylenol anymore......no use for getting old! But I better come to terms with it

8-9 years old I would be thinking a fair price is around $550-600. I wouldn't let that unit go for less than $500.

Totally agree getting older and experiencing diminishing vision is horseshit!! I always had stellar vision, off the charts at the eye exam. Literally could read whatever that exam machine could muster. Now at 45 I am reading books to my kids with arm fully extended. WTF is going on? Haha. Way she goes.

I’m now like Costanza,,,,can squint down to 20/20.

And that's when it starts boys! The arms can't be long enough after a few years. Then you need glasses to see small print. Then you get to the point where you need to squint and use glasses for the small print. Alneit I need to go update my prescription and get some new specs.

Look at the bright side - you'll NEED a 60" hdtv now just so you can see the puck....

Been wearing glasses since grade 4 and I’m 61 3/4. Never forget the first day with them on in class I always sat at the back. Got to school sat down put the glasses on and it was a WTF moment I could actually see the blackboard. First thing I reach for in the morning is my glasses. Blind as a bat w/o them. Lol

I sold my LX5 last year (1 year old with warranty) for $500, took all of 10 minutes probably should have asked for more.
I agree with Mike you would be disappointed with the 55 after using your Marcum.

I was in the exact predicament. Dumped my Lx-5 for an Ice 45 and was very happy I did. I loved the 45 for a couple years until I got a Helix 5 sonar/gps for my boat. I also picked up an ice transducer and ice kit for it. The Helix has a flasher mode but I soon found myself using the sonar mode on the ice. I will NEVER go back to a flasher now. It seems so rudimentary compared to using a sonar. Plus I've got Navionics gps mapping at my fingertips on the same unit. The beauty of the whole thing was it cost me basically nothing. I ended up with a new sonar/gps unit I can use both on open water and on the ice for pretty much what I got for the LX 5. It was an absolute win/win. I've been using the Helix for about 2 or 3 years now and I couldn't be happier!
