Selling a NEW 2015 5 hp Mercury Outboard 4-stroke motor. Won it in the Lundmaina, Pinawa tournament in July 2015. Lubed up and ready to go, but hasn't seen the water yet. Short shaft, internal gas tank. Perfect for a freighter canoe, 12-14' tinner, or as a kicker for a sailboat. MSRP on this motor is $1850, so save yourself a few hundred as well as the + taxes. Balance of 3 year warranty transferable. $1500

when would that warranty run out? July 2018?
Does it have a shifter on the handle or on the motor?
I understand you havent used it but....
any thoughts on if this would be safe to use as a back lake motor as in putting onto a quad or trailer and trail riding into a lake. Sorry if I sound newbish but I have been contemplating a motor upgrade for my pond boat but am not sure about how gentle you have to be with a 4 stroke. I mainly have my motor laying on the floor of my truck behind the seat and travel in that way but if I get to go backwoodsing with Ben it would be in the quad trailer.

Bert: warranty would expire July 16, 2018.

Has a shifter (you don't twist the tiller handle to shift like on older Mercs). This is a good thing IMO, tiller shifts seemed prone to breaking.

Admittedly, most of my backcountry fishing is done with a 9.9 hp 2 stroke merc...the number one issue I've had transporting small four-strokes (for work) is that the oil can leak out if you are not careful about transporting it on the correct side. Other than the oil/correct side consideration, I don't see anything glaring that would make me hesitant to use this motor for backwoods stuff. Suspect it will be marginally heavier than a 5hp 2-stroke....weight is listed as 57lbs.

Bert, when we go backcountry, the motor goes on the front rack from now on and not into the trailer that I like to tip over so much.... Some sort of foam base and some straps and it's golden.

Let's do that lake again in spring.

Craig: Hmmm Im quite interested, when you are transporting them for work are they in the back of a truck kinda thing, just curious how sensitive the oil leaking part would be for my usual trekking around. Love the sound of the weight, likelt very similar to my yammy 4hp. With my yamaha I just plop it down in the bottom of the truck.
Ben: HELL YA LETS DO THAT AGAIN!!!! I bet this motor would get us around a little better and no more gas tank taking up precious room in the tiny boat

Yup, but we'll take my 12 footer next time so we got a bit more space!

Bert, you should fish with @Ernie who runs the site here. Be cool to have Bert and Ernie in a boat together.

ya no doubt, we could do the pigeon dance for uncut as guest starts.

That video is funny, it's kinda like when I go fishing with Ben, I watch as fish jump into his side of the boat

Transporting them in the truck is never the issue....its slinging them in the bottom of an inflated zodiac with helicopters that has caused issues with the oil leaking....hard to say what is really going on up there that results in the oil leaking (swinging or sloshing or ??). Probably not an issue on the front of the quad, but I don't have any direct experience with that to say for sure.

wow ya ok well I certainly hope we won't be dropping them down into the lakes with rope, I am way to outta shape for cliff climbing. K sounds like the oil won't be a major concern to me.

Yeah, there's a pond by my house where I've heard tell that they surface!! lol. But I'd tell you where it was even if you didn't buy....and being a carp angler you probably know it already.

I love fishing but only my daughter can convince me to go target carp. :)

Let's make it a walleye, trout, (any trout) Muskie, or even a perch outing!

Sounds good. Have had a few kijiji inquiries....but you know how those typically go.

I use an old trailer tire (without rim) to transport mine, just lay the motor down on the tire, and a couple of bungie cords to keep it in place. Doesn't get banged up, and acts as a nice cushion.

When I had to move my Suzuki 4 stroke, I used an old ATV tire. Worked good!
