Ive heard this second hand, but arent there now significantly higher taxes/duty on the import of boats, trailers and recreational vehicles than there were a few years ago?

There was an aluminum tariff, not sure if thats still in effect.

Otherwise it’s still mostly the same; Importing a US Boat/Trailer

PST 7%/GST 5%/duty 9.5%.............pst and gst are the same no matter what you buy and bring across. I use this site a lot to figure out duties of items before I buy, just keep drilling down on the tariffs list on the right side until you drill down deep enough and get the tariff of the item you're importing, double clic to move the tariff number over to the form on the left so it auto populates, then enter the $$$$ value of the item, use the drop down menu to select province, and the duty values are calculated for you. I pasted below the calculation for a motor boat, made of metal......if you want to use the form for other items just hit the clear button at the top of the form.

Boat prices were never the issue..............the crappy exchange rate is and the added tariffs were! Stupidly good deals still there to be found even with the crappy exchange rate!

Just the import costs have gone down. I guess, to phrase that better, import costs are once again what they used to be.

If I was in the market for a used, water-ready boat/motor/trailer, in the $14,000 to $30,000 range, I'd still look first, and look hard, south of the border. Walleye Central and many other media in the U,S and A! If looking for an aluminum, MN and the Dakotas, Illinois etc. If someone was looking for a glass Bass boat, I'd start my search in Florida and Texas and that entire region. Florida, mainly because there are just so many boats per capita, fresh and salt. And how bad of a trip would that be...?? Drive down to Florida in March as the snow is melting up here, stay a couple/few days in the sun, enjoy the area, then drive home with a new to you boat that you'll have a month to rig up if need be!

When I picked up my Pro Guide in New York Mills, my buddy that came with, and I made a trip of it. Was a memorable one, even though nothing dramatic happened (aside from buying my dream boat at the time)...was just a really neat experience driving up the 71 south of the border, through the big marsh and rolling hills and small town America, then up through Baudette. As we went over the Rainy, saw a ton of boats out there...was exciting to see after a long winter...then up on the 71 along the east shores of Lake of the Woods then 17 headed west to home.....to an angry, cuz I missed her birthday dinner at her folk's, now ex-wife......... at the time I sure felt bad....zero regrets today.

At that time, dollar was pretty damn near par (2011) and I figured even after fuel and hotel cost I saved about 7 grand.
Did I mention zero regrets?

It was when I bought it off Todd. He recently (at time of meeting) got brought on as Lund Pro Staff so he was replacing the identical 2 yr old Pro Guide with brand new.

It was very much a Walleye only boat. No bow mount, stern mount Traxxis, an LCX-27 at the tiller and show room quality everywhere but where there were 2 slight smudgy footprints at the tiller seat. When I looked at it, he said- "I honestly don't think I've ever set foot on the deck."

Today, she's a multi-species machine. Only thing it's missing is a Talon for Largies...but for what they want for a Talon...pffft, no thanks, can't justify it.

Anyone looking for a boat like that, watch for the seller's name- Todd Cameron in MN. He babies his stuff. Almost as much as @Mike does.

If Mike sells his 1825 Pro Guide, the new owner is going to get the most cared-for boat I've seen. Seriously.

When I bought this spring I was a flip of a coin between the Lund I’m in now, and a 1850 ranger reata 150 Yamaha out of Minneapolis... at the time it was an extra 10% for aluminium tariff when crossing the border (yes it applied to the glass hull)... 4 fucking days....... 4 fucking days after I brought mine home they lifted the tariff.... 4 FUCKING DAYS!!! And in all honesty yeah it’s only 10% on top of all the other shit that adds up... Regardless I’m super happy with my new to me Lund, bought 20 minutes from home!!!
