Side Scan distance

    So watching various YouTube videos I came across this which I never realized. When using SS the object you see on the side is actually minus the depth of what you see. So if you're in 10' of water and you mark something 30' away you have to minus the 10'. so it's actually 20' away. SS distance.jpg

    Simple geometry -
    A2 + B2 = C2
    SS Transducer sees a direct line to object, which in almost all instances is the longest length - can figure out when youre draggin your lure over fish or approaching structure you see

    Start looking at YouTube Spoon, and make sure that ducer is set right, then put the rod away and look at it carefully.

    I am completely guilty of all but ignoring SS at times. I’ve never put that much into learning all the benefits of the tool beyond the blatantly obvious.
    This thread has given me a good reminder to spend some real time this summer learning the finer details I have been ignoring.
    I know we have some advanced electronics users on here (creators ffs) who know how to maximize their information gathering, but there are probably a few like me who don’t get nearly what they could out of what they have.

    Finding transition zones (hard to soft bottom, weed edges etc.) is one of the main benefits of side imaging. You can mark fish with it, though it's not the primary use. All manufacturers are touting their high (mega) frequency options with side imaging. Yet, 455 kHz still gets the most use for the majority of users. Higher frequencies = higher detail at the expense of range. Range is key with side imaging, the wide swath you get with 455 kHz lets you see the lay of the land in perspective. 455 kHz is a great search tool, if you want a more detailed look at a specific area then you can go over it with the higher frequency option. The higher frequencies are of more use in down imaging IMO.

    Transducer placement and proper height and angle are essential. It can take some trial and error to dial it in, a few mm in angle or height can make a big difference. A common issue is partial blockage of the beam by the outboard. Trimming up the outboard is very often necessary.

    Here's one of my favourite screenshots I took in 455 kHz. 121 feet out to either side (minus depth) in only 7' of water. This is the area known as the Snaghole at Buffalo Bay. A bunch of weedy mud depressions in amongst the sand with really defined borders. Looks like a moon landing shot.

    try again please - sidescan porn is gooood!

    I am in preliminary stages of making a transducer holder that is adjustable on the fly - or without getting out of your boat - in hopes of tweaking picture to its best when boat 'level' changes (load, travelling, etc), as well as being able to raise it out of harms way for trailering. Keep ya posted!

    I love side imaging. I have two HDS gen2 12s at the console. One is strictly devoted to side imaging. I use it continually.

    What setting(KHZ) would you suggest if using it in a split screen mode where you have your traditional downscan operating alongside the sidescan page? Can you go into your settings on an HDS Carbon and select a different frequency for each feature? I know I was able to put both up at the same time but never delved into it at all.

    With the 3-in-1, DownScan is fixed at 600 kHz. SideScan will be 455 or 800 kHz.

    I’d set up a page so you have the DownScan pane in between two SideScan panes. Left side set to left only view, right to right only, middle to DownScan. This makes the most efficient use of the screen real estate.

    Downscan shot from last fall on the red, spot locked with the ghost, that pair of cats swam perfectly under the lund… That’s with the 3 in 1 with fixed 600khz downscan…
