I considered getting it myself but I figured I'd pass on some Christmas goodwill to another member.

Turns out the old fella had two tanakas. Just picked it up. Unreal!! He went and bought a Rapala and sold both tanaka's. Didn't want to talk him out of it, just wished him good luck with his new auger.

I believe tanaka's were originally marketed as earth augers. They don't even actually make their own ice flytes. But they do make flytes for drilling I. The ground.

It's tough to find info on these old tanakas. The Tia-350 isn't recommended for anything over 200mm (8") with the earth bit so I'd be a little cautious drilling earth with the 305. [IMG]

Designed as an earth auger (same as husqvarna, stihl, and echo), within reason should be able to handle drilling in the dirt... most will have a different handle attachment though, because dirt is a lot less forgiving!!!

Are you sure the Husky was designed as an earth auger? Been running one for 6 or 7 years and when I researched it it was all about the ice. The earth motor is almost double the weight of the ice powerhead, that can't be all gear box. Not sure they are even still making the ice augers but its an amazing piece of machinery. Defiantly would not use mine for earth, I would think it spins way too fast.

Ya the husky is two separate powerheads. One for each application. And I don't think they are making the ice head anymore, that's why I bought the tanaka tia-350.
