Just popped the card into my Elite 5.... Impressed with the couple of lakes I had time to quickly check out.

Quick question Craig, will AEM chips work in the elite 7M Gold chart plotter?

@canadian.ice - yes, any of the 'm' suffix HDS or Elite units will run our maps.

Thank you. Are they good units? As in fast processing and refreshing of the map while moving?

The first two series of Elite's had some criticism over slow processing speed, in particular there were reported issues with running the Point-1 GPS. The Elite CHIRP units apparently have a faster processer which is needed to run CHIRP. On my Elite-7 CHIRP I've had a couple of episodes of lag when running multiple windows at high speeds while flipping through the menu. Nothing major though.

The screen goes blank on the elite units when you zoom in or out. But only for a second or two. It isn't problematic. If you were used to the smooth zoom of the hds, you would probably think the elites was inferior.....but in reality, I don't think it comprimises functionality at all.

I can confirm that zooming in on my Elite 5 with the AEM chip has some lag compared to my Navionics card. That being said I accredit it to the fact that the maps are much more highly detailed and have to load significantly more information. Once the screen is loaded I didn't notice any lag at all. I got used to it pretty quickly last night when I was playing around with it.

If you don't already have it, I strongly suggest downloading Insight Planner. Pop the AEM card into your computer and you can view all the maps on your PC...mark waypoints, and transfer them over to the card to be viewed on your sonar. Works great!

I have Insight Planner, I've got to play with it more. I uploaded a map from IG and it looked like a dog's breakfast on Insight Planner with major loss of detail. I'm going to assume I need to tweak the settings or do something different.

That's interesting....haven't used it with IG yet, only AEM...with AEM it looks identical to how it looks on my sonar.

earlier versions of insight planner were a little clunky.....seems better now, but at first I was hesitant to even recommend it.

Nice meeting you both tonight. Just wondering, do you guys plan on doing an update each year or every couple of years?

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Pro-Am upgrade evening! Nice to put faces to a few forum names and see a few guys we haven't in a while.

Nice to meet you also @lake-fisher . I think it is safe to say we'll be doing an update each year. Of course you don't have to update each year, if you bought a 2015 chip and there is no new content you want in 2016 but there is in 2017.....you will be able to do the upgrade then.

Thanks for organizing guys, it was nice to meet you both. Got a little shopping done at the same time too, which was rather convenient.

Currently playing around on insight planner right now...new maps look killer. Well done!

@robm - I convinced myself I should buy that HDS 9 on the drive home...obviously it was already sold. Ha! The indecisiveness will continue for now...

Well I had to check out the AEM chip I got the other day, and am really impressed!!! Navionics looks like a child's drawing compared to AEM!!! Only checked out one spot so far, but maybe later I will browse some more, really looking forward to a few areas on bird!!!

Just used the chip to give some GPS coordinates to my dad for the Falcon derby. As close to a spot on a spot you're going to get in the normal derby area. Hopefully it pays off for him.
