    I think now you just put in your max bid and it only charges you a couple of bucks above the highest bidder, but then people just ask their friends to bid up their auction. Filtering to "buy it now" eliminates all the bullshit.

    Ah didn't think of that. The site I used let me set my personal highest price and if it's still valid when the auction closes it will put in a bid for you for just enough to win. If they aren't banned now I'd be shocked because it worked reallllly well for me. This was almost a decade ago now though...
