Super easy to rig up. I just did it recently http://canadianfishingforum.com/forum/threads/helix-9-ice-conversion.21069/ . Using a 26AH battery which should provide plenty of run time, but isn't light.

Looks good! Keep us posted on how it works for you. Pretty huge to lug around, but there are times that's not a big deal, right?

Definitely will. The size doesn't bother me, but if packing space in a toboggan is at a premium it might not be the best solution.

First of all Uncut shared a post, wasn't his post and I actually know the kid who made that original post. Let's just say the drawer is full of knives but none will cut worth shit.

The Helix 7 draws 800 ma so in theory if you have a good 9ah battery, it should last just over 11 hours.

I made my own kit to house my Helix 7, boat model but did the conversion for ice and will be running 2 9 ah batteries.

7.5 hours at 8 brightness with 50-75% battery left.

Absolutely love my flx28, best by far ive owned, and ive had 2 fl18s a fl8, a fl20 a few lx3tc, a showdown 5.6, a helix 5 and just recently a bird 35. The 35 is awesome for the price but its a sensitive biatch!!! Im looking for another flx28 or flx20, i could not stand the delay with the helix

Probably, still a great unit for the price especially if you use it for the boat

I set up my HDS 8 with a second portable transducer just for hard water use. I couldn't really find any soft or hard cases that did it any justice, so I just jerry rigged the unit, complete with 9 AH battery to a piece of plywood. It is not the prettiest but it works. When using the unit in flasher mode, the lag is definately noticeable. If you rip fast, the mark will disapear for a moment. Also, there is something about an LCD display on a flasher that my old eyes don't like. I like the contrast colors on the LX5 flasher but I absolutely hate the digital display on the LX-7 . Using my HDS 8 in graph mode, however, the level of detail is incredible. To anyone that has never used a graph for hard water, you really need to experience it. It is amazing to see the cloud raised by a missed hookset. I laugh every time this happens. I can almost see the dumbfounded look of a stunned fish staring at my now unbaited jig and saying WTF just happened. If I had only one unit for year round use this would be the one. The only problem is that you will likely need a second or larger battery to run it for an entire day. Even in my boat, this unit shared a dedicated battery with my livewell, which is on a timer. The main motor battery is seperate.

I also have an LX-5 flasher that I mostly use. The only time the HDS8 comes along is when I need to mark waypoints or trails, and even then I only turn it on to mark or navigate with. I haven't actually tested it out for a full day's usage while hard water fishing but I highly suspect that on the higher screen brightness that I prefer, my 9 AH battery would not last a full day. If it wasn't for that and the lack of a proper case, I would be using it for everything.
