Wanting to buy a smoker

    Everything I’ve read is you pay a premium for the name and other brands can be had for cheaper. I’d like to get a pellet grill this summer but not sure if that will happen.

    I have the master built electric - really like it! It is set and forget (temp and time) but you have to add chips - one large chip bowl is usually suffice depending on what you are doing. Buddies have Bradleys and they are 50/50 about them. I would think it all depends on what you are going to do!
    Ironically, I have smoked my best ribs and Spatchcocked Chicken on a simple briquet weber bbque...

    Anyone ever do burgers in their smokers?? If you haven’t tried this yet it is a must. So juicy and delicious. I can do 30 at a time. 30 you say? Well we like to entertain in summer.

    Spatchcocked chicken over straight charcoal can’t be beat.

    I know this thread is about smoking...but straight up charcoal bbq is where it’s at. It’s very rare for me to ever use propane these days.

    Another thing I do for a side dish when smoking say ribs or tenderloin, I put a pan of baked beans on lower rack. Collects the drippings from the meat and turns out so gooooood!!!

    I've had my Bradley 4-rack digital for about 8 years now... its been awesome. set and forget... but there are drawbacks (with everything of course)...
    - you can only set the timer for 9hrs and 40mins... so when i do real long smokes (32hrs for 4 full bone in pork shoulders - pulled pork), you have to re-set the amount of time you need a couple times.
    - the pucks are expensive
    - I've had my element go on it twice, once under warranty (Bradley was really good about getting me a new one right quick) and the second I picked up for $25 from cabelas so not terrible... i have a spare now just in case
    - the feed mech can get a little haywire, mine has done it twice and given me error codes - luckily only when i first get it set up and then its good for the rest of the smoke so i haven't been screwed on a smoke yet. but i've read it can be a common issue.
    so i'm not sure if i would get another if this one dies... i do hear really good things about the Master built ones. I would consider a pellet grill but i have a high end Napoleon BBQ and use it a ton so can't justify something like that.

    Saw Lowe’s has the 4 rack digital Bradley on for $449. Should I hold out for a better deal or is that about as good as it gets for savings? Just started looking

    Thanks for the kind offer Ribbie, but I’ve browsed enough recipes on Bradley’s website that my face may never return to its original shape. My shirt is wet and I’m on the verge of dehydration. I’ve decided :tearsofjoy:

    Haha right on well I dont think you'll get many complaints from their output! My two preferences for pucks are Apple and Alder. I find the cherry and mesquite aren't my thing.

    If you want a nice easy start check out a pickled brisket at your local butcher. Premade pastrami essentially. I made it for friends a few years ago and to this day any time I see him he makes a point of bringing up how good it is.

    Yeah i have done lots of smoked pastrami - real good and easy to make!
    As for chips, there is an art to matching with food - myself, i save the heavy smoke for red meat (mesquite, hickory, oak) and the apple/alder for fish and chicken. Personal pref tho.
    Smokers are like augers - they all have a personality that you have to figure out.
